SpellingIQ

The SpellingIQ placement test

Eight words read aloud, plus a few more if your score needs settling. You hear the word, you type it, and there is no autocorrect to lean on, the same way a spelling bee works.

How the score works

At the end you get a single SpellingIQ: a skill rating on a 300–2200 scale, estimated from how hard each word was rather than from how many you got right. It rises when you beat hard words and falls when easy ones beat you, and most adults first land around 900–1200.

You get a likely range with it, because a dozen words can only narrow it so far. A typo counts as a miss, so the estimate allows for slips rather than treating every one as ignorance. It takes about ninety seconds, needs no signup, and headphones help.
