The short version
SpellingIQ collects as little as it can get away with: an email address if you create an account, your gameplay results, and standard analytics. We don't sell your data, and you can delete your account (and everything tied to it) yourself at any time.
What we collect
Account data. If you sign in, we store your email address. Sign-in works by email login link, so we never see or store a password.
Gameplay data. The words you attempt, your answers, your scores and streaks, and your SpellingIQ rating over time. That's the whole point of the product, so it's tied to your account if you have one.
Local storage. If you play without an account, your progress and preferences live in your browser's local storage and never leave your device except to grade your answers and record aggregate share stats, keyed to a random guest ID stored in your browser. That ID is pseudonymous and not tied to your identity. Clearing your browser data clears the ID and your local progress.
Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage: page views, rough geography, device type. Google Analytics sets cookies to do this. We don't use analytics data to identify individual people.
What we use it for
Running the game: scoring your attempts, keeping your streaks, showing your history, and picking the daily words. Sending you the emails you asked for, like magic sign-in links. Understanding, in aggregate, how the site is used so we can improve it. That's it.
We do not sell your personal data, and we don't share it with advertisers.
Who else touches your data
SpellingIQ runs on third-party infrastructure that processes data on our behalf: Supabase (database and authentication), our hosting provider, an email delivery service (for magic links and account emails), and Google Analytics. Each of these processes only what it needs to do its job.
Retention and deletion
We keep your account and gameplay data for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account from the settings page while signed in. That removes your profile and the gameplay history tied to it; anonymized analytics events (no longer linked to you) may be retained. Guest data lives only in your own browser.
Children
SpellingIQ is a general-audience spelling game. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Meaningful changes won't be applied retroactively to data collected under the old policy.
