How this number works
Your SpellingIQ is a skill rating on a 300–2200 scale, not an IQ score. It rises when you beat hard words and falls when easy ones beat you, weighted by how hard each word is, the way chess ratings and ranked games work. Most adults first place around 900–1200. The levels are Starter 300–500, Learner 500–900, Normal 900–1200, Skilled 1200–1500, Expert 1500–1800, Genius 1800+.
Why this works
You hear a word and spell it from memory, with no autocorrect and no options to pick from. The words sit at the edge of what you can do, and the ones you miss come back days later, when you have half forgotten them. Retrieval, difficulty and spacing are among the best-replicated findings in learning research, and the product is built around them.
