Double letters

The spelling occurrence has a double C and a double R, and occurence keeps only one R. The R doubles for the same reason it does in occurred: the stress falls on the cur, and a stressed final syllable usually doubles its consonant before an ending that starts with a vowel.

Doubled letters are part of how a word is built, not decoration. The reason behind a double varies from word to word. Often it is an added ending, sometimes the word's history, so the double is learned along with the word.
