How to spell possession
possession
Not posession or possesion.
The trap
The word possession has four Ss in two pairs, pos-ses-sion, and posession drops one from the first pair. A doubled S sounds just like a single one, so the ear gives no count.
Doubled letters are part of how a word is built, not decoration. The reason behind a double varies from word to word. Often it is an added ending, sometimes the word's history, so the double is learned along with the word.
