How to spell extravagant

extravagant

Not extravagent.

The trap

-ant or -ent

The word extravagant ends -ant, and the misspelling extravagent writes the ending as -ent. The ending is unstressed and sounds the same either way, and extravagance keeps the A.

-ant and -ent are the same sound when the syllable is unstressed. Which one a word takes is usually learned with the word, and its -ance or -ence relative keeps the same vowel (confident, confidence).

What it means

adjective. Lacking restraint in spending money or using resources, or exceeding what is reasonable or appropriate.
