How to spell nonchalant

nonchalant

Not nonchalent.

The trap

-ant or -ent

The word nonchalant ends -ant, and the misspelling nonchalent writes the ending as -ent. The unstressed ending gives no clue to its vowel, and nonchalance keeps the same A.

-ant and -ent are the same sound when the syllable is unstressed. Which one a word takes is usually learned with the word, and its -ance or -ence relative keeps the same vowel (confident, confidence).

What it means

Feeling casually calm.
