How to spell persistent
persistent
Not persistant.
The trap
The word persistent ends -ent, and the misspelling persistant writes the ending as -ant. In an unstressed final syllable the two endings sound alike, and persistence keeps the same E.
-ant and -ent are the same sound when the syllable is unstressed. Which one a word takes is usually learned with the word, and its -ance or -ence relative keeps the same vowel (confident, confidence).
What it means
adjective. Continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.
