How to spell allegiance
allegiance
Allegiance is spelled A-L-L-E-G-I-A-N-C-E.
Not allegience.
Why is allegiance easy to misspell?
The word allegiance ends -ance, and allegience gives it the ending of intelligence and negligence. A soft G before the ending usually comes with -ence, which is what makes the E look right; here an I keeps the G soft, and the ending is -ance.
-ance and -ence flatten to the same sound in an unstressed syllable, so the ear cannot settle it. A relative often can: -ant goes with -ance and -ent with -ence (important, importance).
What does allegiance mean?
noun. Loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause.
