How to spell guidance

guidance

Guidance is spelled G-U-I-D-A-N-C-E.

Not guidence.

Why is guidance easy to misspell?

-ance or -ence

The word guidance ends -ance, and guidence gives it the ending of evidence. Evidence has evident to settle its E, but there is no guidant, and the verb guide gives no hint, so the A is learned with the word.

-ance and -ence flatten to the same sound in an unstressed syllable, so the ear cannot settle it. A relative often can: -ant goes with -ance and -ent with -ence (important, importance).

guide + ance · guide drops its e before -ance

French spelling: silent u after g before e or i
