How to spell ordinance

ordinance

Ordinance is spelled O-R-D-I-N-A-N-C-E.

Not ordinence.

Why is ordinance easy to misspell?

-ance or -ence

The word ordinance ends -ance, and ordinence spells that ending by ear. No everyday -ant word stands beside it to settle the vowel, so the A is learned with the word. Ordnance, without the I, is a different word, and it ends -ance too.

-ance and -ence flatten to the same sound in an unstressed syllable, so the ear cannot settle it. A relative often can: -ant goes with -ance and -ent with -ence (important, importance).

What does ordinance mean?

noun. An ordinance is a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority.
