How to spell reference
reference
Reference is spelled R-E-F-E-R-E-N-C-E.
Not referance or referrence.
Why is reference easy to misspell?
The word reference ends -ence, and referance spells that ending by ear. The verb refer leans to -ence, as differ and confer do in difference and conference: a tendency, not a law, but these three agree. And referrence is wrong too: the stress has moved to the first syllable, so the R does not double the way it does in referred.
-ance and -ence flatten to the same sound in an unstressed syllable, so the ear cannot settle it. A relative often can: -ant goes with -ance and -ent with -ence (important, importance).
What does reference mean?
noun. The action of mentioning or alluding to something.
