How to spell counterfeit
counterfeit
Not counterfiet.
The trap
The word counterfeit ends -feit, with E before I, and the misspelling counterfiet swaps the two letters. Forfeit and surfeit share the ending, so the three can be learned together.
IE and EI are easy to swap, so the order has to be known. When the pair says 'ee' it is usually IE, but EI straight after a C that says S (receive), unless the IE came from a Y (policies); when it says 'ay' it is usually EI (eight).
What it means
adjective. Made in exact imitation of something valuable or important with the intention to deceive or defraud.
