How to spell niece
niece
Not neice.
A homophone of 'knees'.
The trap
The word niece puts I before E, and the misspelling neice swaps the two letters. The pair says ee with no C before it, which is where IE is the usual order, as in piece.
IE and EI are easy to swap, so the order has to be known. When the pair says 'ee' it is usually IE, but EI straight after a C that says S (receive), unless the IE came from a Y (policies); when it says 'ay' it is usually EI (eight).
What it means
noun. A daughter of one's brother or sister, or of one's brother-in-law or sister-in-law.
