How to spell forfeit

forfeit

Not forfiet.

The trap

I before E

The word forfeit ends -feit, with E before I, and the misspelling forfiet swaps the two letters. Counterfeit and surfeit end the same way, so the three can be learned together.

IE and EI are easy to swap, so the order has to be known. When the pair says 'ee' it is usually IE, but EI straight after a C that says S (receive), unless the IE came from a Y (policies); when it says 'ay' it is usually EI (eight).

What it means

verb. To lose or be deprived of property or a right or privilege as a penalty for wrongdoing.
