How to spell sentence
sentence
Sentence is spelled S-E-N-T-E-N-C-E.
Not sentance.
Why is sentence easy to misspell?
The word sentence ends -ence, and sentance gives it the ending of distance. The two endings sound the same unstressed; distance has distant to settle its A, and sentence has no such partner, so its E is learned with the word.
-ance and -ence flatten to the same sound in an unstressed syllable, so the ear cannot settle it. A relative often can: -ant goes with -ance and -ent with -ence (important, importance).
What does sentence mean?
noun. A set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command.
