How to spell siege

siege

Not seige.

The trap

I before E

The word siege puts I before E, and the misspelling seige swaps the two letters. The swap is tempting because seize, which sounds almost the same, goes the other way.

IE and EI are easy to swap, so the order has to be known. When the pair says 'ee' it is usually IE, but EI straight after a C that says S (receive), unless the IE came from a Y (policies); when it says 'ay' it is usually EI (eight).

What it means

noun. A military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.
