How to spell weird

weird

Not wierd.

The trap

I before E

The word weird puts E before I, and the misspelling wierd swaps the two letters. It says ee with no C in front, which is where the old rhyme expects IE, and weird is one of the well-known exceptions.

IE and EI are easy to swap, so the order has to be known. When the pair says 'ee' it is usually IE, but EI straight after a C that says S (receive), unless the IE came from a Y (policies); when it says 'ay' it is usually EI (eight).

What it means

adjective. suggesting something supernatural; uncanny
