How to spell calendar
calendar
Not calender or calander.
The trap
The word calendar ends -ar, and calender gives it the -er that most English words take. The last syllable is unstressed and sounds the same either way, so the ear cannot settle it.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
What it means
noun. A system for fixing the beginning, duration, and divisions of the year.
