How to spell grammar

grammar

Not grammer.

The trap

Unstressed vowels

The word grammar ends -ar, and grammer gives it the -er ending of hammer and summer. Grammatical stresses that syllable and gives the A back: gram-mat-i-cal.

An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.

What it means

noun. The whole system and structure of a language or of languages in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax and morphology.
