The trap
The middle of minuscule is a U, min-us-cule, and miniscule writes the mini that the meaning suggests. Unstressed, the U sounds like an I, so the ear backs up the wrong guess.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
