The trap
The word definitely has finite inside it, de-finite-ly, and definately writes an A where the I belongs. Definition stresses that syllable and gives the I back: de-fi-ni-tion.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
