How to spell cellar
cellar
Not celler.
Homophone with 'seller' (vendor).
The trap
The word cellar ends -ar, and celler gives it the -er of seller, which sounds the same. A cellar is a room and a seller is a person, and the unstressed ending cannot tell them apart.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
What it means
noun. A room below ground level in a house, typically used for storing wine or coal.
