How to spell separate
separate
Not seperate.
The trap
The middle vowel of separate is an A, and seperate is what the ear writes down. Unstressed, that A flattens to the same murmur an E would make, so the E beside it gets copied and the A goes missing.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
What it means
verb. To set or keep apart.
