The trap
The word tendency ends -ency, and tendancy writes the ending as -ancy. It is tend plus -ency, and the unstressed ending sounds the same whichever vowel spells it.
An unstressed vowel flattens to the same sound whatever letter spells it, so the ear cannot tell them apart. A relative that stresses the syllable gives the letter back.
